Pedalling in the dark and cold

For the last two weeks the cold and dark has getting to me a bit. It's dark when I leave in the morning and dark when I leave work. Not wearing my cycling glasses makes my eyes water and come the evening my eyes are really struggling to stay open.

With the cold, I've been wanting to eat more. I'm not sure if you burn more calories when it's cold but I'm guessing you do.

One thing I've been struggling with over the last few months was cold feet. Even with two pairs of thermal socks and carrier bags on them, they've felt like they had fallen off. A colleague lent me a pair of overshoes and so far they've not felt too cold.

I've had a few not so healthy days in the last two weeks but I have continued to cycled even with heavy snow.

Last week I measured myself and there have been some noticeable losses since four weeks previous.

Chest Waist Thigh Neck
March 2010  50"48" 30"18.5"
Oct 12 2010 44" 42" 26"16"
Nov 9 2010 43"41"26"15.5"
Dec 7 201042"40"26"15.5"

Today was my forthrightly weigh-in. I've not lost or gained a thing. I'm still 93.9kg.

I'm going to need to buy some more clothes soon as my clothes are too big again. Yesterday I bought a new shirt for work. 16" collar compared to 18.5" I was wearing back in March and even then it was uncomfortably tight if I did the top button up.

Statistics for the last two weeks;
Total rides: 18
Total distance: 175.05 miles
Total time: 14h 08m 55s
Elevation gain: 5,183ft
Avg speed: 12.4 mph
Calories burned: 11,638

  1. Great job on the weight loss. Stick with it. I know first hand that it goes back on a LOT faster than it comes off. Stick with it!

  2. I've found that I've always put on weight during the winter months, even when I was doing the same mileage as I was doing over the summer.
    Well done and keep cycling.

  3. Good going, Yes you do burn more calories in the cold, but the body holds on to fat as well. So don't worry too much about weight loss!
