Surprise weight loss

Having been on holiday last week and not much riding the week before I didn't think I'd see a weight loss although I was crossing my fingers. I tipped the scales at 119.7kg (18st 11lb 14 oz) a loss of 2.3kg (5lb 1oz). As you can imagine I'm over the moon.

Today was also the start of my first full weeks commute. The ride in wasn't bad at 51m 26 secs. Legs were fresh after 5 days no riding but there was some arse numbing.

The ride home wasn't pleasant though. I got some arse numbing again but also had the pins and needles in my feet. These I can just about put up with but the headwind was unpleasant. My ride home was a rather poor 1h 4m 27 secs.

Bring on tomorrow for another 18 miles!

  2. Well done mate, that's brilliant! Don't be worried by time though, in fact if I were you I'd ignore it at the moment, just concentrate on doing the distance. My first full pedal home which is uphill was 1 hour 15 minutes. It's now around the 40 - 45 minutes mark 10 months down the line. Don't forget, it's fat loss not performance we're after! So you could argue that a longer time on the bike is better! We'll start worrying about performance once we're fitter and thinner!

  4. Well done on the weight loss and well done for actually getting off your [numb] arse and doing the full commute. Am proud of you.

Do you cycle in with clippy shoes or strap your shoes to your pedal?

  5. Thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions. Tonight I changed my cycle computer (phone) so I could only see current speed. No looking at times.

I'm surprised at how many people at work ask about my progress and congratulate me. Lots of them are now commenting on my weight loss too.

Joby - I just use trainers on the standard mountain bike cage pedals. No straps and no SPDs (yet).

  6. Maybe that is your issue?

When I used normal trainers on normal pedals, I was always trying to keep my foot on my pedals, which made it uncomfortable and sometimes numb and tingly - never occurred to me until I was thinking back today.

  7. It was suggested by another cyclist. I will eventually switch to SPDs.

  8. Funds allowing obviously, I'd make the switch to spuds a number one priority, the difference is huge!

  9. My first priority is to get some slicks, then SPDs. If anyone wants to agree disagree with this, please give me your thoughts.

  10. Well done, that is a FANTASTIC loss, chuffed for you. Well done on the commute too. Slicks will make you faster - less road resistance. I still ride with trainers on a pedal with toes clips, Im a little scared about making the switch the SPDs just yet, though I have kind of "penciled it in" for later in the year or maybe early next year
