The man who cycled the Americas

Tonight I watched a programme on BBC iplayer called 'The man who cycled the Americas'.

It's a three part series on BBC One that follows Mark Beaumont, famous for braking the record for pedalling around the world. This time Mark's journey takes him from Alaska, USA to Ushuaia, in southern Argentina; cycling the length of the Rockies and Andes, 13,000 miles through 12 countries. He also attempts to reach the summits of the highest mountains in North and South America. For nine months, Mark filmed his intimate adventure at bike speed.

It's not only amazing seeing what a single man on a cycle can achieve but also the challenges he goes through and the places he visits. Definitely worth a watch.

The second part of the series is on Next Tuesday (30th March) at 10.35pm on BBC One.

You can catch the first part on BBC iplayer at http://bbc.co.uk/i/rqgh6/

  1. I Sky plussed it and watched it yesterday Toby, I was going to mention it on my Blog, but fair play to you, you have done a more than adequate write up. As you say, well worth a watch.

The thing that got me was his ability to pedal up those climbs, with that bike loaded like it was and with hub gears. The lower one must be a real low gear! I'll have to do a bit of Googling to see if I can find out what kit he used.

  2. I think it's worth putting a post about it on your blog as more people read yours than mine.
